Decades of compassionate, experienced care
Sonya began her career in mental health in 2000 as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Houston–Downtown and, in 2009, a Master of Social Work from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work.
She has extensive experience treating mood disorders, including depression, anxiety, trauma, and bipolar disorder, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Her career includes work with incarcerated clients at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office County Jail, managing outpatient substance use treatment services at local nonprofit agencies, and clinical roles in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospital settings. As Clinical Team Leader at The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD, she developed deep expertise in crisis intervention.
Sonya’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community runs deep. Since 1991, she has volunteered as an HIV educator providing pre- and post-test counseling at Legacy Community Clinic (formerly The Montrose Clinic).
