“Accept no one’s definition of your life, define yourself.” ― Harvey Fierstein
As a proud and fierce ally and gender affirming competent therapist, I am committed to creating spaces where every individual feels seen, valued, and supported for who they truly are. I stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, advocating for equality, respect, and the dismantling of systems that perpetuate hate and discrimination. In the 1990’s I volunteered for a local non-profit clinic providing pre-test and post-test HIV results; I also worked at the Harris County Jail where I provided education on sexually transmitted infections and assertiveness skills to sex workers for the HIV Department.
In my role as a therapist, I have the privilege of walking alongside people as they navigate their journeys of self-discovery and authenticity. I work to provide a safe and affirming environment where clients can explore their identities without fear of judgment, knowing they are embraced for all that they are. My practice is rooted in the belief that gender diversity is beautiful, and every person deserves the opportunity to thrive unapologetically in their truth.
I am one of the few therapist in the State of Texas that is Certified for Standards of Care (SOC) 8 with the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH). I have worked with Transgender clients for over ten years providing individual and group sessions. I am experienced in completing evaluations for letters needed for hormone treatment, and gender surgery procedures.
Why is it important to have a WPATH SOC 8 Certified Therapist?
The WPATH.org Standards of Care 8 certification signifies that a therapist has been trained and is proficient in providing care for transgender and gender-diverse individuals according to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health’s (WPATH) guidelines. These standards are widely recognized in the healthcare field as the benchmark for delivering competent, ethical, and informed care to individuals navigating gender identity and gender expression issues.
Working with a therapist who holds this certification ensures that clients receive care that is evidence-based, culturally competent, and respectful of their gender identity. Certified therapists are trained to:
- Provide affirming care that prioritizes the well-being and dignity of gender-diverse individuals.
- Follow best practices for mental health, including appropriate assessment for gender-affirming medical interventions.
- Ensure informed consent for treatment options, including surgeries and hormone therapy, in accordance with established medical guidelines.
- Offer emotional and psychological support for the unique challenges that transgender and gender-diverse individuals may face, such as discrimination, societal stigma, and gender dysphoria.
The WPATH certification reflects a commitment to ongoing education, professional development, and adherence to ethical standards in the care of transgender clients. Choosing a certified therapist ensures that individuals receive comprehensive, compassionate, and up-to-date care from a professional who understands the complexities of gender identity and can guide clients through their personal journeys with respect and expertise.
Working with the LGBTQ+ Community
Ms. Gonzales’ work with the LGBTQ+ community began in 1991 when she volunteered for over 3 years as an HIV educator conducting testing counseling for persons who were testing for HIV. Throughout her time in this role, she not only imparted crucial knowledge about HIV prevention and treatment but also became a trusted ally for many individuals navigating their health journeys. In 2007, she began providing substance use disorder treatment for HIV+ clients through a community program, emphasizing the intertwined challenges of addiction and HIV. As a compassionate therapist, she offers a range of mental health services tailored specifically for the LGBTQIA community, recognizing the unique struggles they face, including discrimination, stigma, and social isolation. In addition to her therapeutic work, she has served on the board of The Resource Group, which manages finances for HIV services, ensuring that vital resources are allocated effectively. Her unwavering commitment as an activist has been instrumental in raising awareness about the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ folks and advocating for their rights, allowing her to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
